Note 4: for vs 1:20 (1917 note reads) ‘Most conclusively of all, these messages do present an exact foreview of the spiritual history of the church, and in this precise order’. Ephesus though a local church in the apostle’s day, is typical of the first century church as a whole. (The Open Door.) Smyrna, characterizes the church under persecution, e.g. from AD 100 – 316; Pergamum, “where Satan’s throne is,” (2:13; cp. 2-14-15, and notes), is suggestive of the church mixing with the world, e.g. in the Middle Ages; Thyatira reveals how evil progresses in the church and idolatry is practiced. Sardis is representative of the church as dead, yet still having a minority of godly men and women, as during the Reformation. Philadelphia shows revival and a state of spiritual advances; and Laodicea (3:14-19) is illustrative of the final state of apostacy which the visible church will experience.
Dr. Michael Heiser’s book, Angels, chapter 7, pg 147: “It is noteworthy that each of these instances contains the same statement that makes it clear that the intended audience of these calls for repentance is the church, not the angel through whom the message is mediated. Each passage ends with the statement, “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches” (Rev 2:7, 11, 17).”
“The text makes it clear that the risen Christ is speaking to the congregations, composed as they are of human believers. The angel is not the church; the angel is a communicative surrogate for the church. Consequently, the angel is not the target audience for the calls to repent. Moreover, there is no indication that the angel surrogates are fallen and estranged from God. Rather, in concert with the model of Michael, Israel’s patron angel, we have every reason to believe these angels are faithful members of the heavenly host. ….”

The 1967 Scofield Study Bible KJV with Word Changes;[pg 1357, note 4 -]The rider on the white horse is not Christ. Those who identify this rider with Him consider the passage a prophecy of conquest by the Gospel. But no crown was given to the Lord as the proclamation of the Gospel began, and the terrible world events which accompany the other three riders [vv. 3-8] do not imply an earlier conquest by Christ.) He walks in midst of the seven golden lampstands; (vs 1:20 explains the seven lampstands are the seven churches)

Rev 2:6 “But this you have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.”
The name “Nicolaitans,” according to early church fathers (Ignatius, Iranaeus, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Hippolytus), refers to those who, while professing themselves to be Christians, lived licentiously. What in Ephesus was “deeds” (v. 6) became in Pergamum a “doctrine” (v. 15).

God begins and ends mankind’s story with the Tree of Life. “In order to keep fallen man from eating of “the tree of life,” God drove him from Eden and placed a Cherubim at the gate to guard the way to the tree (Gen 2:9; 3:22-24).
