I. “Scofield Reference Notes on Revelation 1.” “Scofield Reference Notes (1917 Edition).” 1917. See Scofield 1967 Edition, page 1352-1353. Note 4: for vs 1:20 (1917 note reads) ‘Most conclusively of all, these messages do present an exact foreview of the spiritual history of the church, and in this precise order’. Ephesus gives the general state at the date of the writing; Smyrna, the period of the great persecutions; Pergamos, the church settled down in the world, “where Satan’s throne is,” after the conversion of Constantine, say, A.D.316. Thyatira is the Papacy, developed out of the Pergamos state: Balaamism (worldliness) and Nicolaitanism (priestly assumption) having conquered. As Jezebel brought idolatry into Israel, so Romanism weds Christian doctrine to pagan ceremonies. Sardis is the Protestant Reformation, whose works were not “fulfilled.” Philadelphia is whatever bears clear testimony to the Word and the Name in the time of self-satisfied profession represented by Laodicea.’ For my part . . . . I have read Dr. Michael Heiser’s books “The Unseen Realm,” and “Angels,” followed him on, [ ]and listened to his podcasts, [] which means, I needed to add some of his comments and remove my own.  Just one quote, page 147, buy it and read them yourselves. “Angels,” Chapter 7, pages 141 through 147;  “It is noteworthy that each of these instances contains the same statement that makes it clear that the intended audience of these calls for repentance is the churchnot the angel through whom the message is mediated. Each passage ends with the statement, “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches” (Rev 2:7, 11, 17).” “The text makes it clear that the risen Christ is speaking to the congregations, composed as they are of human believers. The angel is not the church; the angel is a communicative surrogate for the church. Consequently, the angel is not the target audience for the calls to repent. Moreover, there is no indication that the angel surrogates are fallen and estranged from God. Rather, in concert with the model of Michael, Israel’s patron angel, we have every reason to believe these angels are faithful members of the heavenly host….”
Back to Revelation – Chapter 2 Rev 2:1 “To the angel of the church of Ephesus write, ‘These things says He who holds the seven stars in His right hand, who walks in the midst of the seven golden lampstands:’ ”  Rev 1:4,12,16,20; 3:1; 4:5; 5:6; 15:1,7; (Rev 1:13; 2:1; 7:15; 21:3; Exo 25:8; 29:46; Lev 26:12; Psa 68:16; Eze 43:9; 2 Cor 6:16) (See 1:4,5)   1st Church – Rev 2:1; the 1st Seal of Rev 6:2; occurs during this time. 1st Seal – [Rev 6:2 NKJV] [2 And I looked, and behold, a white horse. He who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer.] [pg 1357, note 4] – The rider on the white horse is not Christ. Those who  identify this rider with Him consider the passage a prophecy of conquest by the Gospel. But no crown was given to the Lord as the proclamation of the Gospel began, and the terrible world events which accompany the other three riders [vv. 3-8] do not imply an earlier conquest by Christ.) He walks in midst of the seven golden lampstands; (vs 1:20 explains the seven lampstands are the seven churches) 7 stars (angels), 7 golden lampstands.   Exo 25:8; And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. Exo 29:46; And they shall know that I [am] the LORD their God, that brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, that I may dwell among them: I [am] the LORD their God. Lev 26:12; And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people. Eze 43:9; Now let them put away their whoredom, and the carcases of their kings, far from me, and I will dwell in the midst of them for ever. Psa 68:16; Why leap ye, ye high hills? [this is] the hill [which] God desireth to dwell in; yea, the LORD will dwell [in it] for ever. The chariots of God [are] twenty thousand, [even] thousands of angels: the Lord [is] among them, [as in] Sinai, in the holy [place]. Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, [for] the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell [among them]. Eze 43:9; Now let them put away their whoredom, and the carcases of their kings, far from me, and I will dwell in the midst of them for ever. 2 Cor 6:16; And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in [them]; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.)   Rev 2:2 “I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars;”   Rev 2:3 “and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary.”    Rev 2:4 “Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.”   Rev 2:5 “Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.” “or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.”    Rev 2:6 “But this you have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.” The name “Nicolaitans,” according to early church fathers (Ignatius, Iranaeus, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Hippolytus), refers to those who, while professing themselves to be Christians, lived licentiously. What in Ephesus was “deeds” (v. 6) became in Pergamum a “doctrine” (v. 15). Rev 2:7 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.” Rev 2:7; 22:2,19; Gen 2:9; God begins and ends mankind’s story with the Tree of Life.  “In order to keep fallen man from eating of “the tree of life,” God drove him from Eden and placed a cherubim at the gate to guard the way to the tree (Gen 2:9; 3:22,24). “The tree of life: appears three times in Rev. 22 (vv. 2,14,19 [Gk.], where the new paradise is described.” See note 2, pg 1353 in 1967 Edition.   Gen 2:9; And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.   Rev 2:8 “And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write, ‘These things says the First and the Last, who was dead, and came to life:’ ” Rev 1:4,5,8,11,17; 2:8; 4:8; 21:6; 22:13; Isa 41:4; 44:6; 48:12; Col 1:14;   2nd Church – the church under persecution 2nd Seal Rev 6:3 – the horse was red; and power was given to him that sat on it to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another; Could this be during the WW I and II? “The First and The Last” – the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts. Isa 41:4; Who has performed and done this, calling the generations from the beginning? I, the Lord, the first, and with the last; I am he. Isa 44:6; Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: “I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no God.” Isa 48:12; “Listen to me, O Jacob, and Israel, whom I called! I am he; I am the first, and I am the last.” Col 1:14; in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. And he is the head of the body, the church. 18He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent   Rev 2:9 “I know your works, tribulation, and poverty (but you are rich); and I know the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.” In the year 2020, we see Jews in America who do not support Israel. Is this to whom this refers? Rev 2:10 “Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.”  Rev 2:10; 3:11; 6:2; 12:1; 14:14; 1 Thess 2:19; 2 Tim 4:8; Jam 1:2; 1 Pet 5:4; Crown of Life   1 Thess 2:19 For what [is] our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? [Are] not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming? 2 Tim 4:8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: 1 Pet 5:4 And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.   Rev 2:11 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.” *Rev 20:14-15 *The second death   Rev 2:12 “And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write, ‘These things says He who has the sharp two-edged sword:” Rev 1:16: 2:12,16; 19:15; (*Isa 49:2; Eph 6:17; Heb 4:12) 3rd Church 3rd Seal Rev 6:5 – a black horse; and he that sat on him has a pair of balances in his hand . . World Wide Famine *Two-edged sword   Isa 49:2; And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me; Eph 6:17; And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Heb 4:12; For the word of God [is] quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.)   Rev 2:13“I know your works, and where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is. And you hold fast to My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days in which Antipas was My faithful martyr, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.” 4/2/13   ‘Gate to Hell’ Known as Pluto’s Gate — Ploutonion in Greek, Plutonium in Latin — the cave was celebrated as the portal to the underworld in Greco-Roman mythology, and Italian archaeologists announced this month that they found it. see:  Listening to this session 4 video Dr. Heiser will explain what the ‘Gate to Hell’ is. We were never taught this in Sunday School.  Rev 2:14 “But I have a few things against you, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality.”  The god Balaam and Balak evil gods still torment humans today. see:  Listening to this session 4 video Dr. Heiser will explain what the ‘Gate to Hell’ is. We were never taught this in Sunday School.  Rev 2:15“Thus you also have those who hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate.”   Rev 2:16“Repent, or else I will come to you quickly and will fight against them with the sword of My mouth.” Rev 1:16: 2:12, 16; 19:15, 21; Isa 49:2; Eph 6:17; Heb 4:12;    Rev 2:17“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. Isa 62:2; And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall name. Zech 3:9; “For behold, on the stone that I have set before Joshua, on a single stone with seven eyes, I will engrave its inscription, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of this land in a single day.” Luke 4:4 But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’   Rev 2:18 “And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write, ‘These things says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet like fine brass:’ ” Rev 1:14,15; 2:18; 19:12; Gen 49:12; Dan 7:9;    4th Church 4th Seal Rev 6:7 – Would this be WW l/ll, Korean War, Viet Nam War, Abortion years His eyes, His feet like fine brass (bronze)   Gen 49:12; His eyes [shall be] red with wine, and his teeth white with milk. Dan 7:9; I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment [was] white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne [was like] the fiery flame, [and] his wheels [as] burning fire. Dan 10:6His body [was] like beryl, his face like the appearance of lightning, his eyes like torches of fire, his arms and feet like burnished bronze in color, and the sound of his words like the voice of a multitude.   Rev 2:19“I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience; and as for your works, the last are more than the first.”   Rev 2:20 “Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols.” 1 Kings 18:4; 19:2;    1 Kings 18:4; For it was [so], when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.) 1 Kings 19:2; Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do [to me], and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time.   Rev 2:21 “And I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent.”   Rev 2:22 “Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds.”   Rev 2:23 “I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts. In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, Heb 10:35Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. Heb 13:15-16; Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. 1 John 3:23-24; And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. Whoever keeps his commandments abides in him, and he in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.   Rev 2:24 “Now to you I say, and to the rest in Thyatira, as many as do not have this doctrine, who have not known the depths of Satan, as they say, I will put on you no other burden.”   Rev 2:25 “But hold fast what you have till I come.”   Rev 2:26 “And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations,”   Rev 2:27 “and he will rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father” Rev 2:27; 12:5; 19:15; Psalms 2:9;    Psalms 2:9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.   Rev 2:28 “and I will give him the morning star.” Rev 2:28; 22:16;   Rev 2:29 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”  Zech 4:6;   Zech 4:6; Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, ‘This [is] the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.’   Will continue to add chapters, a work in progress. BABYLON  (Scofield, C. I. “Scofield Reference Notes on Isaiah 13″. “Scofield Reference Notes (1917 Edition)”. <;. 1917.)  The city, Babylon is not in view here, as the immediate context shows. It is important to note the significance of the name when used symbolically. “Babylon” is the Greek form: invariably in the O.T. Hebrew the word is simply Babel, the meaning of which is confusion, and in this sense the word is used symbolically. (1) In the prophets, when the actual city is not meant, the reference is to the “confusion” into which the whole social order of the world has fallen under Gentile world-domination. (See “Times of the Gentiles,” Luke 21:24Revelation 16:14Isaiah 13:4 gives the divine view of the welter of warring Gentile powers. The divine order is given in Isa. 11. Israel in her own land, the centre of the divine government of the world and channel of the divine blessing; and the Gentiles blessed in association with Israel. Anything else is, politically, mere “babel.” (2) In Revelation 14:8-1116:19 the Gentile world-system is in view in connection with Armageddon; Revelation 16:1419:21 while in Rev 17, the reference is to apostate Christianity, destroyed by the nations Revelation 17:16 headed up under the Beast ; Daniel 7:8Revelation 19:20 and false prophet. In Isaiah the political Babylon is in view, literally as to the then existing city, and symbolically as to the times of the Gentiles. In the Revelation both the symbolical- political and symbolical-religious Babylon are in view, for there both are alike under the tyranny of the Beast. Religious Babylon is destroyed by political Babylon Revelation 17:16 political Babylon by the appearing of the Lord Revelation 19:19-21. That Babylon the city is not to be rebuilt is clear from ; Isaiah 13:19-22Jeremiah 51:24-26,62-64. By political Babylon is meant the Gentile world-system. (See “World,”; John 7:7Revelation 13:8) It may be added that, in Scripture symbolism, Egypt stands for the world as such; Babylon for the world of corrupt power and corrupted religion; Nineveh for the pride, the haughty glory of the world.
