CHAPTER 6 – Rewards… HOW WILL YOU FEEL IF YOU RECEIVE NO MORE REWARD THAN ME?

We all have an idea of what a reward is. It can be used to mean a payment or a bestowal of praise or price for something you may do. There are many uses we could apply it to. There are many ways to interpret it if you are reading the ‘Word of God’ the Holy Bible. There are some who interpret the word to mean a great and marvelous gift for doing certain ‘good’ things with a clean and pure heart given to you by the Great and Mighty Lord God Almighty.

But first I wish to tell you the ‘story’ God told us in Matthew 20:1 For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard 2 Now when he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4 and said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.’ So they went. 5 Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did likewise. 6 And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing idle, and said to them, ‘Why have you been standing here idle all day?’ 7 They said to him, ‘Because no one hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right you will receive.’ 8 So when evening had come, the owner of the vineyard said to his ste But when the first came, they supposed that they would receive more; and they likewise received each a denarius. 11 And when they had received it, they complained against the landowner, 12 saying, ‘These last men have worked only one hour, and you made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the heat of the day.’ 13 But he answered one of them and said, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? 14 ‘Take what is yours and go your way. I wish to give to this last man the same as to you. 15 ‘Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things? Or is your eye evil because I am good?’

Matthew 6:1-5 ‘Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven. So when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners o that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. …..Whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do,, for they neglect their appearance so that they will be noticed by men when they are fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.

HOW WILL YOU FEEL IF YOU RECEIVE NO MORE REWARD THAN ME? , ‘These last men have worked only one hour, and you made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the heat of the day.’

WOULD YOU TREAT ME DIFFERENTLY IF YOU KNEW RIGHT NOW THAT WE WERE BOTH GOING TO RECEIVE EXACTLY THE SAME REWARD? “Did you not agree with me for a denarius?”

KJV Rev 20:12And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is [the book] of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 14And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. NASB Rev 20:12And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. 13And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. 14Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

The interpretation of these verses are clear. Judging the works, which are those things which were written in the books, is for the judgment of ‘the dead’! Rom 8:1There is no condemnation of those who are sealed on their foreheads, “In whom also after that ye believed” in Christ,” ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise.” Those who have believed in Christ will not stand in this judgment. Not only are the ‘works’ of ‘the dead’ recorded in books, but then the ‘book of life’ must also contain your name in order to escape the judgment of being ‘cast in to the lake of fire’.

Always remembering –  when you interpret scripture you must include the ‘context’ and the whole of scriptures teaching.

Rom 8:5For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 12 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

If being ‘in the Spirit’ and the Spirit of God dwells in you and ‘good works’ are done, who receives the reward? the Glory?

Matt 5:46 …..what reward have you

Matt 6:2-5, 6, 18; …they have their reward, ………reward thee openly……reward thee openly

Matt 10:41,42;…..prophet’s reward……….righteous man’s reward

Matt 16:27;……..reward every man according to his works (deeds/doings/works) (I believe this is judgment day for the dead.)

Matt 25:34Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

Lk 19:17; ……parable of 10 pounds……..given authority over 10 cities (This particular verse is the vanity of all who give and give of their life to the Lord and desire our Father in heaven will reward them especially over those who give little, though that is all they were to do)

Dan 12:3; …shine like the brightness of the firmament

1 Cor 3:8,14; ……every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labor…(does this mean at ‘present’ time you will receive your reward or when we have survived ‘the fire’)

14if any man’s work abide which he hath built upon it, he shall receive a reward. (Another verse that is the vanity of all who give and give of their life to the Lord and desire our Father in heaven will reward them more than those who give little)

1 Cor 9:17; …..what reward have I

1 Cor 9:24-25;……….an incorruptible crown

2 Tim 4:7,8; …..crown of righteousness…. not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. (all who love his appearing will receive a crown of righteousness)

Rev 2:10……..crown of life, the Lord hath promised to them that love him(This is the same crown as the crown of righteousness)

Rev 22:12;……..reward is with me to give to every man according as his work shall be… (Christ will reward every man) (Christ will reward every man according as his work shall be) NASB  (to render to every man *according to what he has done.) Repayment? Not hardly! or doing what the Holy Spirit wanted done when and where He led. Yes.

*Does that mean we are saved by our works? No, but it does show that living faith will have works with it (James 2:20; Titus 3:8). ©2001 David Guzik – No distribution beyond personal use without permission. Titus 3:1Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,

It is ‘implied’ that each man will receive reward for ‘as his work shall be….’ And this means ‘someone is going to get a bigger better reward because they, living in the Spirit, did such good works. Vanity of vanities all is vanity.

There are many who proclaim they know what to do to receive a reward and that those who accomplish this ‘what to do’ will be receiving a reward. No, no, no we don’t mean to make you jealous or make it competition. We tell you the ‘truth’ so you can obtain more and more rewards and for those who aren’t trying to obtain rewards maybe this will inspire them to do better so they can obtain rewards. If they are discouraged by this then they aren’t worthy of the reward anyway.  Telling us someone will receive a crown for ‘rewards’ and say what they think is worthy of a reward, in their view, is ‘puffed up’ and self-righteous. Certainly not what rewards are.

In Revelation the 24 elders crowns, there is a lot of assuming that these elders have received their rewards, thus crowns, and they willingly cast them back to God. I believe this has nothing to do with rewards, but crowns as rulers, and I just don’t think they are casting rewarded crowns back as worship, but crowns that they take off and place at the feet of the victorious King. I just don’t see enough evidence from scripture to assume these crowns represent rewards. Telling us someone will receive a crown for ‘rewards’ and say what they think is worthy of a reward, in their view, is ‘puffed up’ and self-righteous. Certainly not what rewards are.
